This module is designed to enable students to develop their language skills in order to be in a position to engage in academic activities abroad in the future. The module develops both receptive and productive linguistic skills as well as (inter)cultural awareness and is conducted entirely through the target language. Among topics covered will be Germany as a multicultural society, youth culture, travel, living abroad and the use of the German language in different parts of the world. A variety of text types and audio-visual sources will be used. Students will consolidate existing linguistic knowledge and be introduced to new grammatical structures, vocabulary and cultural contexts. Students will learn to express their opinions orally and in writing on a variety of topics introduced in the module.

Learning Outcomes

Employ a sociolinguistic and cultural survival kit for potential time abroad (structure of German universities, internships, red tape, official communication, administration, etc.).
4. Draw on a sufficient range of language to develop arguments, express viewpoints, give clear descriptions, and using some complex sentence forms (grammatical control) to do so (orally and in writing) and different registers depending on the communication genre and medium.
