Description

The module aims to provide students with evidence-based knowledge and skills specific to health promotion, protection and disease prevention at a population level. Students will be given the opportunity to apply their newly acquired knowledge in their own practice placement as part of this module. The module will equip students with competencies relevant to the practice of public health, including health promotion, protection and disease prevention in public health practice. As part of the module students will take into account populations with reduced cognitive ability/those experiencing cognitive deficits. Healthy Ireland, the principles of Sláintecare and the MECC project will be considered in the modules.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge in measuring population health and have a high level of awareness of the strengths and limitations of the various epidemiological methods.
2. Critically analyse the key population health challenges nationally and internationally
3. Critically evaluate health promotion/health protection/disease prevention interventions
4. Critically reflect on ethical issues and UN Sustainable Development Goals as they relate to population health and identify how they can be addressed in public health practice

Lecture36Students will have 36 hours of online lectures which will cover the core content of the module. Each of the lectures will be supported by DCU studios in terms of their presentation. Each lecture will refer students to further reading and resources such as a book chapters, peer reviewed publications, reports, video, podcast, Ted Talk etc.
Seminars12Students will get 12 hours of seminars as part of this module delivered by experts working in the field of public health, health promotion and prevention.
Independent Study77Students will spend 77 hours on on directed learning using the module resources referred to throughout the online lectures
Clinical placement125Clinical Practicum: 125 hours Students will spend time applying public health practice in their own place of work, and have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge acquired during the module to their workplace to advance their competencies.

RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment
