Description This module will adopt a thematic approach to exploring the transformation of early modern Ireland. Ranging across time from in the mid-sixteenth century to c.1801, students taking this module will examine the evolving relationship between Ireland and, first, the English crown and, later, the United Kingdom. Beginning with the Reformation and Tudor conquest, and ending with the Act of Union, the students will assess key questions of military conquest, political conflict, religious organization and identity, land ownership, cultural change, economic development, and population movement. These issues will be interrogated from the perspectives of the peoples who lived in Ireland, while placing Ireland’s evolution in context by setting it within wider peninsular, European and global frameworks. Through lectures, classroom discussion and a range of assessments, the module will enhance students’ knowledge of the period, their understanding of current historiographical debates, and their ability to both critically assess and communicate the history of early modern Ireland. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
