Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the basics of pre-production, production, and post-production. 2. Recognise the type of edited shots and sequences that illustrate good compositon and story development. 3. Operate post-production software to an introductory level, including: organising of clips; use of transition effects, adjusting of audio levels, imposition of basic graphic titles and exporting of files to a variety of file based output media with mastery over frame size, data rate, colour depth, metadata. 4. Compose and arrange a series of edits, including shot selection, transition types, audio and visual compositions, sequence order and exporting of final output for distribution. 5. Achieve good level of competence with core camera technology and understand the fundamentals of aperture, focus, exposure, depth of field and camera movement. Through practical exercises with the camera begin to connect core production skills to the grammar of filmmaking and visual storytelling. 6. Present ideas, arguments and information in a coherent and clear manner. (Critical Thinking DACS) 7. Generate novel ideas relating to a given topic or scenario. (Creative Thinking DACS) 8. Indicative Content and Learning Activities
General Notice As is the case with some multimedia modules the precise digital video hardware and software tools on offer to students may alter to adapt to the relatively rapid changes occurring within the sector. Introduction to Digital Video Indicative content: students will be introduced to the various theories of Pre-Production; Production and Post-Production. Project Overview Learning activities: Students will research a project idea, develop a storyboard; source suitable video material online; operate file management and work flow procedures. Introduction to the Non-Linear Editing (NLE 1) Learning activities: Utilizing software applications, students will organise projects, allocate storage space, create bins as well as project files, and understand the various file formats utilized for exporting projects. Introduction to the Non-Linear Editing (NLE 2) Indicative content: Digitization, editing clips, working in the Timeline, adjusting audio, linking audio and video files, the Toolbar, adding transitions, basic titles, working in the Canvas and Viewer windows, use of markers, overwrite and inserting clips, snapping functionality, selecting and deleting gaps, applying superimpositions and transparency, importing audio from CDs Introduction to the Non-Linear Editing (NLE 3) Indicative content: Make final audio and video adjustments; reconnect media; consideration of file formats; preparing files for export to DVD, Hard Disk and the Web. Project Production Learning activities: Within a small group students will develop a post-production project, utilizing available media resources. General Note As per 'Full-time Workload' description, students will be expected to continue their laboratory work with their own research and self-taught tutorial materials in order to increase their understanding and competencies within the various software and hardware environments. Weekly Breakdown Week 1: Introduction to module, inc. examples of prior student work within a variety of categories e.g. mini-documentary, interviews, drama, music video etc. Week 2: Introduction to camera essentials incl. depth of field, focal lengths, colour temp, frame rates, history of camera formats. Week 2 Lab: Introduction to the camera and first vox pop interviews Week 3: Introduction to production sound incl. types of microphones, functions, sound recording techniques Week 3 Lab: Introduction to microphones and 2nd Vox Pop interviews Week 4: Introduction to Editing: history of film editing from celluloid to non-linear software Week4 Lab: Introduction to Adobe Premiere and editing basics Week 5: Proposal Writing and Pitching Week 5 Lab: In Lab supervised editing of material from first two shoots leading to small project. Week 6: Crit Session for small project in lecture. Feedback and critique given by lecturers and classmates Week 6 Lab: Group pitching of final projects. Week 7: (Reading Week). Week 8: Case Studies. Taking existing video productions and breaking them down into constituent elements Week 8 Lab: In lab editing exercise - taking existing edit and recutting to alter meaning Week 9. Introduction to lighting. History of lighting techniques in film and television Week 9 Lab: Three point lighting kit demo Week 10: Introduction to Colour Week 10 Lab: In lab colour exercises using colour tools within Adobe Premiere Week 11: Viewing of feature length documentary. Week 11 Lab: In details analyses of the production of above documentary Week 12: Funding Models: overview of the funding models available in Ireland for film and video production.
