Description

To introduce the student to a range of types of translation, with a view to providing a basic understanding of general translation practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Translate short literary texts from Japanese into English
2. Use appropriate background documentation, relevant to the task of translation (eg dictionaries)
3. Write grammatically correct, natural English texts
4. Compare translation produced by machine translation with published translation
5. Follow a real-life translation brief (technical / financial area)

Directed learning20Translate a variety of texts into English. Analysis of machine translation generated translations with published translations or translations produced in class.
Independent Study105Preparation and translation of texts as per LOOP. All translations should be completed prior to coming to class, and difficult issues should be noted for class / group discussion.
