Faculty SALIS School Humanities & Social Sciences
NFQ level 8 Credit Rating 5
Description

This module is for learners of Japanese who are working towards the post-beginners level. Students will learn the language in both spoken and written forms, further developing and consolidating their linguistic skills and cultural awareness in relation to familiar subjects of personal relevance. They will also learn to read and write a larger number of kanji characters and kanji-written words as part of their vocabulary learning.

Learning Outcomes

1. Extract information from a variety of basic authentic texts in areas of most immediate priority (e.g very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment) in both reading and orally, provided that the speech is clearly and slowly articulated.
2. Demonstrate effective oral skills in a range of social situations such as talking about your daily life, skills and past experiences.
3. Produce short texts on matters of personal relevance using a larger number of kanji characters (e.g. write short basic descriptions of events, activities and personal experiences using present and past tenses). Also, engage in basic social communication online (e.g. sharing news and making/confirming arrangements to meet).
4. Demonstrate control of basic structures of the language as well as increasingly complex grammatical structures (e.g word order in main and subordinate clauses, the use of cases, adjectival endings, verb tenses).
5. Continue identifying economic, social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland and Japan.
6. Use IT skills to access language specific-resources (life-long learning) to be able to reflect on your own learning path in your future progression in the language.
