Description

The primary purpose of this module is to improve students’ proficiency in Japanese. Additionally, this module aims to nurture students’ learning autonomy. During the course, students will develop their skills and knowledge of the Japanese language and society. Students will increase their vocabulary, strengthen their grammatical knowledge, and learn to respond to both predictable and unpredictable situations that may arise in Japan. Students will participate in the following learning activities: (i) going through a range of audio and written materials, ii) being introduced to more advanced vocabulary and complicated grammar points, and (iii) completing in-class tasks using a proper register. Students are expected to attend and contribute to lectures, build their portfolios, and perform guided independent studies.]

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify the main points of audio materials such as radio, news, discussions
2. Deliver a coherent and straightforward argument/speech using a proper register
3. Extract information from various authentic written sources such as simple news articles, letters, brochures
4. Produce relatively concise written pieces such as blog entries and letters using a proper register to convey general information or their feelings
5. Demonstrate learner autonomy by making clear self-study plans and critically analyse their progress in learning Japanese

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
The class focuses on the development of students’ linguistic and communication skills in Japanese. Students will further nurture their proficiency in all 4 skills (listening/reading/writing/speaking) through learning materials covering various engaging topics such as music, manga, and festivals. Students are expected to prepare for each synchronous session, participate in class activities (including role-plays, task completion, and grammar exercises), submit all assignments, attend an oral exam at the end of the semester, and supervise their own learning.
