Description

This module is designed for elementary users of Japanese. Students will consolidate some of the essential aspects of the language, expanding their understanding of the cultural conventions. Throughout the year, students will enhance their communication skills in their target language, by performing individual and collaborative tasks. Students will develop their ability and competence in spoken production and basic oral interactions in the target language while also establishing solid listening and writing skills. Students will develop skills that will help them understand and critically evaluate information around Japanese culture and produce spoken and written texts directed to facilitate the understanding of cultural conventions to Irish speaking audiences. To this end, they will learn more kanji characters and kanji-written words for higher level text comprehension and production. Lifelong learning strategies will also be developed to support language learning. All teaching materials in this module are designed at the A2.2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR).

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the overall meaning of short texts from a variety of simple texts dealing with everyday topics (e.g. lifestyle, hobbies, sports, weather, cultural events), being able to derive the probable meaning of unknown words/signs from the context.
2. Demonstrate effective oral skills in a range of social situations (e.g presentation or description of people, living or working conditions, daily routines and basic past activities and personal experiences).
3. Produce short texts using more kanji characters on matters of personal relevance e.g. write short basic descriptions of events, activities and personal experiences using present and past simple. Also, engage in basic social communication online (sharing news and making/confirming arrangements to meet).
4. Demonstrate control of basic structures of the language as well as increasingly complex grammatical structures (e.g. word order in main and subordinate clauses, the use of case and sentence-end particles, auxiliary verbs, adjectival and adverbial endings, verb tenses).
5. Continue identifying economic, social, and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland and Japan.
6. Use IT skills to access language specific-resources (life-long learning) to be able to reflect on your own learning path in your future progression in the language.
