Description
This module is designed for doctoral students conducting research in applied linguistics or related fields. First, it focusses on core and emerging concepts in the field of applied linguistics. These include language teaching and learning, language planning and policy, sociolinguistics and critical linguistics. Second, the module reviews the research methodologies most frequently employed by researchers in applied linguistics. Third, it equips students with the tools required to become discerning consumers of applied linguistics research.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate awareness of main subfields and leading researchers in the field of applied linguistics 2. Critique the research methodologies and methods used in applied linguistics 3. Situate their doctoral research either within or outside of the core domains encompassed by the field of applied linguistics 4. Evaluate the strengths, weaknesses and potential impact of research and publications in applied linguistics.
