Description The purpose of this module is to introduce students to various approaches to text and discourse analysis. Students will become familiar with different text and discourse types such as argumentative and descriptive texts, as well as texts from different genres including academic discourse. In addition to examining textual structures and linguistic features, students will explore how meaning is constructed in discourse, considering factors such as context, power relations, and communicative intent. They will also develop essential skills such as identifying the purpose, functions and discursive strategies of texts. Through the application of various methods, they will cultivate a critical attitude towards text types and discourses. Students are expected to attend timetabled sessions as well as to carry out self-study and group tasks to acquire knowledge of contemporary approaches to text and discourse analysis and how they can be best used for different purposes. At the end of the module, students will be able to identify the characteristics of texts and discourses from different genres, discuss these features in theoretical terms and produce a text in an appropriate style, demonstrating awareness of both textual and discursive conventions. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
