Latest Module Specifications

Current Academic Year 2025 - 2026

Module Title Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics
Module Code MEC1000 (ITS: MM203)
Faculty Mechanical & Manufacturing Eng School Engineering & Computing
NFQ level 8 Credit Rating 5
Description

The purpose of this module is to build on the elements of the kinematics and kinetics of particles learned in EM101 and EM102, and to introduce the students to the fundamentals of the kinematics and kinetics of systems of particles and rigid bodies.

Learning Outcomes

1. Solve kinematics and kinetics problems involving relative motion of particles and rigid bodies and analyse the velocities and accelerations of planar mechanisms
2. Use work-energy and impulse-momentum methods to solve kinetics problems involving particles and rigid bodies
3. Calculate the forces and moments arising from a specified motion and the forces and moments required to produce a specified motion
4. Calculate the accelerations associated with the motion of systems of particles
5. Determine the effects of forces & torques on planar systems, including the effects of rolling and sliding contact between bodies
6. Determine the power transmission and speed characteristics of simple & compound fixed centre and epicyclic gears
7. Report practical results in a coherent and logical manner

Reassessment Requirement Type
Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment
