Description

This module aims to provide an overall knowledge and insight into employment law and the corresponding legislation and judicial elements that underpin employment law decisions. It aims to provide an understanding and appreciation of the everyday application of employment law in the workplace. This will equip students with a strong foundation in employment law so as to assist them in the crucial business of maintaining full legal compliance in the Irish workplace. Further, this module provides an introduction to the skills of negotiation in an employment context and the opportunity to practice them.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the impact of employment law and third-party decisions on the HR policies, practices and procedures of an organisation so as to be legally compliant at all times.
2. Recognise the uses and implications of legal materials including the constitution, statutory law, statutory instruments, European legislation (directives and regulations), codes of practice, case law and judicial precedents.
3. Evaluate the implications of current employment legislation and related decisions of various adjudicating bodies for an organisation's HR policies, practices and procedures.
4. Explore the various rights, duties and responsibilities employees and employers have towards each other and the general public in a work context
5. Describe the essentials of negotiation and the key skills and groundwork for effective negotiation in an employment law context
