Description

Environmentalists, policy makers and planners have used the term sustainability for many years now and it is a term that has come to embrace concerns about the social, as well as the physical environment. These concerns range from the immediate and short-term safety and social exclusion such as health, road to the very long-term such as the security of energy supplies and climate change. For the past 20 years, one of the major issues on the sustainability agenda has been transport and logistics. Transport is a complex system and depends on multiple factors, including the pattern of human settlements and consumption, the organisation of production and the availability of infrastructure. It is also characterised by a number of sometimes diametrically competing goals, including increased mobility and accessibility whilst balancing the need for environmental protection. This module covers the broad area of sustainability related to transport and logistics.

Learning Outcomes

1. Determining how to manage distribution channels sustainably, transparently, efficiently and effectively
2. Evaluate and describe the interconnected nature of transport, logistics and the supply chain
3. Discuss and critically appraise the area of sustainable transport
4. Determine and illustrate the importance of measuring and managing the creation of distribution channels sustainably
5. Discuss the digitalisation of supply chains and the effect of digital solutions on sustainable logistics
