Description This module engages students with national arts policy and legislation as well as the cultural ecosystem of organisations and initiatives that facilitate choral music practice at national and local levels in Ireland. It provides students with the insights and capacities to act strategically and take on leadership roles in the choral music sector. Through critically engaging with scholarly literature and selected case studies of arts initiatives and choral music projects, students will gain insights into the complex issues and trends within the arts sector, as well as developing an understanding of the drivers of arts policy formation. The module equips students with a range of theoretical perspectives and research approaches which will be useful in their own research. It ultimately leads students to an appreciation of the place of choral music practice both in developing communities and in national arts development. Learning Outcomes 1. Apply a systematic understanding of the local and national legislative, organisational, funding, artform-development and documentary context within which choral music is practiced in Ireland. 2. Draw on theoretical knowledge to evaluate and critique developments in national and regional infrastructure for the arts. 3. Use mapping, case study techniques and sociological perspectives within their own research. 4. Situate choral practice in Ireland within wider cultural developments and draw inferences for understanding policy and priorities. 5. Take a strategic leadership role in choral music based on deep, critically engaged knowledge of national arts infrastructure. 6.
