Description

The final year project is a two semester project undertaken during the fourth year. It can be offered to students who show an outstanding prospect of persuing an academic career. The eligibility of a student will be determined on the basis of their academic performance in the second and third year. Projects are suggested and supervised by staff members and reflect the research interests of staff. The aim of the project is to develop the students ability to implement a project in mathematical sciences under the guidance of a staff member.

Learning Outcomes

1. Execute a project producing progress reports for line manager/supervisor and meeting necessary deadlines
2. Source material relevant to a research project
3. Extract and digest the main scientific ideas contained in a piece of published research
4. Supply the technical details missing from the main source article, including finding appropriate references for the relevant results and concepts
5. Take responsibility for the progression of their work under the guidance of a supervisor
6. Write a well-structured report containing a suitable balance between broad overview and technical details
7. Produce documents using Latex
8. Design and produce good presentation slides
9. Communicate the key points of the project to a non-specialist audience
