Description

The focus of this module is on the principles of caring for four unique populations: mental health, maternity, children and older adults. Safety is always the first concern and the concepts of communication, person-centered care and family-centered care serve as a basis to explore the effects of illness on individuals and their families.

Learning Outcomes

1. Explore the fundamental concepts of care associated with special client groups and their families in a variety of special healthcare settings
2. Demonstrate a knowledge of the impact of illness and the specific nursing needs of the infant / child / adolescent and their family in the hospital and community setting
3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the principles of midwifery practice and the role of the midwife caring for women and their families from pregnancy through to discharge planning
4. Demonstrate a knowledge of the nature of nursing clients and their familes with mental illness, categories of mental illness and the implications for general nursing practice in all health care settings
5. Explore the many special healthcare needs and available supports for the older adult and their families across healthcare settings and in the home

The concept of mental health and illness
The nature of psychiatric nursing and the variety of setting in which it occurs. The implications and approaches of mental health and illness in the general setting

The key concepts underpinning children's nursing
Care of the child and family in hospital and other health care settings. Family centred care and its fole in children's nursing. Strategies to minimise the effects of hospitalisation on the child and family, the role of play and safety issues.

The principles of Midwifery
Models of practice including Pre-conception, ante-natal, intra partum and post natal care.Principles of care including breast feeding of the new born infant

The principles of caring for the elderly patient
Principles of caring for the elderly patient including safety, mobilisation and advocacy
