Description

To apply general nursing principles to special client groups and practice settings, specifically mental health, maternity care, and care of the older person. To advance students’ knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of children’s nursing in a variety of settings.

Learning Outcomes

1. Explore the fundamental concepts of care associated with special client groups and their families in a variety of special healthcare settings
2. Explore and expand knowledge of the principle roles of the children’s nurse and the nursing care needs of the infant/child/ adolescent and their family in the acute children’s hospital and community setting.
3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the principles of midwifery practice and the role of the midwife caring for these women and their families
4. Demonstrate a knowledge of the nature of nursing clients and their families with mental illness, categories of mental illness and the implications for general nursing practice in all health care settings
5. Explore the special healthcare needs of the elderly patient and their families

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

The concept of mental health and illness
The nature of mental health nursing and the variety of setting in which it occurs. The implications and approaches of mental health and illness in the general setting

Children's nursing
Nursing assessment, care planning, delivery techniques and evaluation of care for the sick infant/child and their family to include the Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS). Principles of care including nursing assessment and care delivery for the newborn, infant feeding and immunization of the newborn/child.

The principles of Midwifery
Models of practice including pre-conception, ante-natal, intra partum and post- natal care.

The principles of caring for the elderly patient
Principles of caring for the elderly patient including safety, mobilisation and advocacy
