Description

Under the guidance of the preceptor the student will develop a perceptive on the role of the nurse in providing care to a person with intellectual disability and have an opportunity to develop observation /intervention skills that are relevant to client care and safety. This will take place during a one week orientation placement in semester one followed by a five week placement in semester two.

Learning Outcomes

1. Engage in a one week orientation to the placement.
2. “Be with” an individual with intellectual disability.
3. Identify the components of an empowering relationship with a person with intellectual disability.
4. In collaboration with the preceptor and client identify a number of interventions that facilitate client choice and empowerment, present a rationale for the interventions chosen.
5. Demonstrate an ability to assess, undertake and report clinical observations under the guidance of a qualified nurse that will act as a preceptor.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of and adhere to the health and safety policies relevant to the practice placement and students’ role and responsibility therein.
