Module Title Contemporary Philosophy
Module Code PHE1010 (ITS: PHIL6)
Faculty Humanities & Social Sciences School Theology, Philosophy & Music
NFQ level 9 Credit Rating 15
Description

Philosophy continues to have a powerful influence on contemporary society and thinking, often without its influence being recognised by those on whom it has an impact. This module explores some of the major individuals and schools of thought in this respect, from Hegel and Heidegger to Beauvoir, Levinas and Derrida. Students on this module complete a dissertation on a specialised topic and/or philosopher instead of a final examination.

1. Evaluate the central tenets of some of the mainstreams movements in twentieth century European Philosophy
2. Critique the characteristic approaches of late 19th and 20th century philosophies to the main philosophical problems of the time
3. Compare the main methods of contemporary philosophical inquiry to their predecessors
4. Assess late 19th century analysis and its relevance in more contemporary philosophy
5. Discriminate between various types of philosophical methods that were deployed in the development of phenomenology
6. Synthesise different definitions of phenomenology through an investigation of alternatives proposed in, for example: Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenology; Merleau-Ponty's existential phenomenology; Derrida's deconstruction of phenomenology; Lévinas's ethical phenomenology of 'the other'
