Module Title Clinical Exercise Physiology for S & C
Module Code PHS1008 (ITS: SS513)
Faculty Health & Human Performance School Science & Health
NFQ level 9 Credit Rating 10
Description

This module aims to advance students’ theoretical knowledge of, and practical competence in, the role of exercise/physical activity in the prevention and management of chronic, lifestyle-mediated diseases with particular emphasis on cardiovascular disease. Students will develop a deep understanding of the molecular, cellular and physiological factors affecting cardiovascular structure function in healthy and disease populations in response to acute and chronic exercise. Students will also develop the ability to critique contemporary research and practices in order to design, implement and evaluate physical activity programmes to enhance health, function and performance for healthy and clinical populations.

Learning Outcomes

1. A contemporary understanding and appreciation of the pathophysiology underlying chronic lifestyle mediated diseases with a particular focus on cardiovascular disease
2. A comprehensive understanding of the cellular, molecular and physiological responses to acute and chronic exercise across the lifespan
3. A proficiency in clinical exercise testing and interpretation
4. Assimilate the disparate domains of conditioning science to design, prescribe and deliver exercise programs to maximise health in both healthy populations and those with chronic disease
