Current Academic Year 2025 - 2026

Module Title Physics Laboratory 2 (Science and Mathematics Education)
Module Code PHY1041 (ITS: PS250)
Faculty Physical Sciences School Science & Health
NFQ level 8 Credit Rating 5
Description

To provide you with a wide range of practical skills and competencies to carry out in physics experiments appropriate to the junior and senior cycle physics curricula, and enhance your ability and familiarity with related equipment and techniques. To complement and reinforce the theory covered in lecture modules, and in so doing, demonstrating the important synergy of classroom and laboratory teaching in science education. To provide training in the following areas: good laboratory practice. keeping a laboratory notebook. data analysis and presentation. technical report writing. appropriate aspects of laboratory safety. To enhance your practical skills in performing experiments with a focus on intermediate level physics concepts

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of a wide range physics experiments appropriate to the junior and senior cycle physics curricula
2. Apply inquiry methods to teaching physics as a laboratory subject at Junior Cycle level
3. Reflect on the learning of physics through inquiry laboratories
4. Apply appropriate safe laboratory practices
5. Identify connections between experiment and theory for key intermediate level physics concepts
6. Plot and analyse graphs both manually and computer-aided
7. Identify sources of error in an experiment and estimate the associated uncertainty in a measured quantity
8. Produce a written report on experimental work with appropriate reference to theory and discussion
9. Analyse and interpret scientific data
10. Reflect on own learning

Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Semester 1 Physics Labs
You will carry out a selection of experiments, with a strong focus on experiments at intermediate level physics.

Semester 2 Physics Labs
You will carry out laboratories designed specifically for use with physics teachers. The development of critical thinking skills, scientific modelling, pedagogical content knowledge (how to teach the material) and metacognition are firmly embedded in these laboratories. Assessment of these labs is through grading of laboratory reports and evaluation of laboratory skills. You will engage in design and implementation of your own investigation to support student learning in physics.
