Description

The aim of this module is twofold. It will introduce students to the history of Yugoslavia, the circumstances and political developments that led to its breakup, as well as the political developments in its successor states. It will also, using the former Yugoslav region as a case study, introduce students to the conceptual framework of collective memory, and discuss what role memory has played in the Yugoslav breakup and the conflicts that ensued, as well as the role it continues to play in national politics in the region.

Learning Outcomes

1. LO1: Discuss the historical circumstances as well as political developments that led to the creation, and later breakup, of Yugoslavia
2. LO2: Critically evaluate the processes of memory-making during the Yugoslav conflicts and up to the present day
3. LO3: Analyse the role different actors, both domestic and international, can play in the processes of memory-making
4. LO4: Analyse social artefacts as memory objects
