Description This module aims to present an overview of Judaism and examine some of the main areas of dialogue and disagreement in the context of Jewish-Christian relations. A foundational goal is to facilitate an engagement with Judaism through a selection of Jewish texts or studies about Judaism from the Biblical, Rabbinic, Medieval, Enlightenment (Haskalah), Post-Enlightenment (post-Haskalah), Shoah, and post-Shoah periods. Building upon this background, we will begin to access the history of Jewish-Christian relations, particularly some of the major strides that have been made since the horrors of the Shoah and to recognise the most promising areas, texts, and figures for improved Jewish-Christian dialogue as well as the best approaches in grappling with key areas of ongoing disagreement. The students will also be encouraged to attend local monthly meetings of the Irish Council of Christians and Jews during the term and to visit the Irish Jewish Museum. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Learning Outcomes 1. Understand key facets of Judaism, from key events in the Tanach to core themes of Rabbinic Judaism and the Haskalah. 2. Discuss the diversity of Jewish Post-Holocaust Theology. 3. Utilize theological and moral reasoning to evaluate changes and growth in Christian theologies since the Shoah. 4. Describe post-Holocaust Christologies and their impact on Jewish-Christian relations. 5. Analyse the current state of Jewish-Christian dialogue and relations, especially regarding discussions on Jesus; religious pluralism; covenant; ethics; Islam; and the State of Israel. 6. “Jewish Continuity and How to Achieve It” (J. Sacks) Will examine contemporary problems of identity and areas of strength in Jewish identity today Living Judaism Study how Jewish life is lived and practiced today. Biblical and Rabbinic Judaism Survey of key Texts and Figures in the Tanakh and Talmud. Levinas and the Talmud Will study sample texts from Levinas on the Talmud. From Maimionides to The Kabbalah to The Jewish Enlightenment Historical overview of Jewish History from the time of Maimonides to the Haskalah The Shoah and Post-Holocaust Jewish Thought Will study central texts and figures of post-Shoah Jewish (and Christian) thought and the impact of the Shoah on Judaism (and Christianity) Jewish Annotated New Testament and Jewish Readings/Critiques of Christianity Will examine Jewish readings/critiques of the New Testament and Christian Beliefs Christology and Multiple Covenants: Christian Perspectives Will examine the changing, post-Nostra Aetate Christian view on Judaism and the covenant never revoked. Jewish-Christian Dialogue Today: Case Studies—1. Sisters of Sion and 2.
