Description

This module is conducted predominantly through Spanish. Throughout the year, students will perform individual and collaborative tasks to develop their confidence and competence in spoken and written production as well as interaction in the target language. They will develop skills that will help them source and critically evaluate information about Spanish-speaking cultures and produce spoken and written texts directed to a Spanish-speaking audience, as well as lifelong language learning strategies. Materials used in this module are mainly pitched at CEFR level A2.

Learning Outcomes

1. Extract information from a range of different written materials such as newspapers and websites on familiar subjects, such as everyday life, university life, interests, travel, current affairs, etc.
2. Understand announcements, instructions, and messages on concrete topics spoken in standard language at normal speed and retrieve relevant information from authentic audiovisual sources in Spanish on chosen topics.
3. Communicate orally and in an intelligible manner, on familiar topics related to his/her interests.
4. Show a good degree of grammatical control; draw on a sufficient vocabulary to express him/herself on most topics pertinent to his/her everyday life such as university life, interests, travel, current affairs, etc. and make only a few mistakes leading to misunderstanding.
5. Make effective use of digital tools and resources for language learning and language use (spoken and written) and engage in activities to develop capacity for lifelong learning.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Format
The course is conducted through Spanish. Timetabled sessions are interactive and learner-centred.

Students are expected to attend and contribute to all sessions. They are also expected to engage in language learning activities on a regular basis.

Syllabus
The syllabus focuses on increasing the language fluency and accuracy as well as covering a variety of cultural aspects through a range of tasks, class activities and projects.

Class activities
Students will be asked to work in pairs/groups and complete a variety of language assignments/tasks. These can include but are not limited to: role-plays, interviews, mini-dialogues, language and cultural quizzes, cloze-tests, grammar exercises, written and audiovisual comprehension exercises and presentations based on short specific projects.
