Description

This module, taught entirely through Spanish, aims to develop students’ language competence and fluency in written and spoken production at an intermediate level. Students will encounter a variety of literary and non-literary texts as well as a range of audio-visual sources in order to develop both global and detailed reading and listening comprehension. Knowledge of current affairs, culture and society in Spanish-speaking countries is further consolidated through exploring a number of relevant topics such as Spanish-speaking countries as multicultural societies. Moreover, there will be an emphasis on teamwork and oral presentation skills throughout the semester. Materials used in this module are mainly pitched at CEFR level B1.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand main points and finer details from authentic textual and audio-visual sources including charts, statistics, websites, podcasts etc. in Spanish on selected topics.
2. Express him-/herself coherently in writing on topics beyond those relating to his/her immediate personal experience, such as current affairs and cultural production of the Spanish-speaking countries, and show his/her awareness of a variety of text type conventions, such as formal email, report, instruction manual etc.
3. Clearly communicate orally on topics such as current affairs and cultural production of the Spanish-speaking countries with some degree of fluency, and provide arguments and examples supporting his/her opinion.
4. Demonstrate a good use of intermediate language and structures in order to communicate clearly and efficiently in a variety of contexts.
5. Make effective use of digital tools and resources for language learning and language use (spoken and written), including searching and retrieving relevant and reliable information as well as creating online content in the foreign language.

Seminars	24	Students are expected to actively participate in class discussion with individual contribution to whole-class and small group discussions.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Format
The course is conducted through Spanish. Timetabled sessions are interactive and learner-centered

Students are expected to attend and contribute to all sessions. They are also expected to engage in language learning activities on a regular basis.

Syllabus
The syllabus focuses on increasing the language fluency and accuracy as well as covering a variety of cultural aspects through a range of tasks, class activities and projects.

Class activities
Students will be asked to work in pairs/groups and complete a variety of language assignments/tasks. These can include but are not limited to: role-plays, interviews, mini-dialogues, language and cultural quizzes, cloze-tests, grammar exercises, written and audiovisual comprehension exercises and presentations based on short specific projects.
