Description

Second year programme building on earlier Applied Studies in Athletics 1 module. Module will illustrate the fundamentals of coaching track and field running events and relays, jumps and throws to be used in the Post Primary Curriculum; Highlight rules, techniques, and strategies, presenting scientific realities of athletics which can be used to teach theory including but not limited to the biomechanics and physiology of bodies in motion and psychology behind competing and learning track and field events; Module will review and explore a range of appropriate strategies for teaching and learning, thus preparing the students for School Placement and familiarising them with Athletics in the post-primary PE curriculum; Develop prior learning to explore pedagogy, which can extend more able and enable less able pupils through differentiation and personalised learning.

Learning Outcomes

1. 1. Identify a range of athletics events. 2. Apply appropriate and effective teaching styles for athletics taught in physical education. 3. Identify the curriculum documentation informing decisions that should be made regarding the delivery of athletics across the Irish post primary PE curriculum and justify implementation of athletics events accordingly. 4. Analyse performance in selected athletics event, drawing on different theoretical perspectives, collect relevant data to compare performance to that of a model performer, and identify key areas of performance which require development (performance goals). 5. Digital ProjectVideo Analysis of Athletics Event-Complete a 10 minute video project similar to LCPE PAP. Following the sampling of a range of running events, students analyse their performance in a selected discipline. If restricted through medical grounds, students can complete the project through a coach perspective. Project is completed in digital format over four sections: Performance analysis; Identification of four performance goals and training vlog; Concluding analysis; Overall coherence.50%Week 12
ParticipationAssessment 2 based on participation across the module (20%) and a Peer Teach (30%) during week 12 on an athletics events (Runs, Jumps, Throws) at the completion of the Athletics Ireland Level 1 coaching certification.50%Week 12

RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.
