Module Code SPO1053 (ITS: SS510)
Faculty Health & Human Performance School Science & Health
NFQ level 9 Credit Rating 10
Description

The aim of this module is to support students in drawing together and advancing all aspects of the programme to successfully manage both injured patients and physically active populations in an environment of “almost independent” practice wherein the academic staff provide support “from a distance”. Students will 1. Organise, manage and lead the Student Led Clinic through the semester, 2. Attend and document team placements, noting both their injury assessments and their implementation of rehabilitation and strength and conditioning programmes therein, 3. Attend and document placements with chronic illness populations, noting their independent development and prescription of specifically tailored exercise, strength and conditioning programmes for the chronically ill, 4. Refresh emergency care training to the required standards of professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Proficiently assess an injured patient utilising all the guidelines and clinical skills to which he/she has been exposed to during the programme.
2. Produce a professional clinician’s standard of documentation and clinical notes from all consultations and interactions with patients within clinics, team placements and chronic illness placements.
3. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate professionally with all colleagues including but not limited to other allied healthcare clinicians, management teams, coaches, exercise instructors and exercise physiologists.
4. Effectively manage a patient from initial assessment through to return to play or work, both in a team and clinical environment for healthy and chronically ill populations.
5. Prescribe, engage in and lead one-on-one strength and conditioning sessions and group exercise sessions for the chronically ill, basing exercise prescription on evidence-based scientific principles.
6. Refresh emergency care training to the required standards of professional practice.
