The module aims to: provide the professional preparation necessary for students to explore, understand and critically consider curriculum related issues. provide participants with the knowledge and skills to understand, discuss and evaluate physical education and sports policy in Ireland. provide participants with the opportunity to explore, and critically interrogate curriculum and instructional models for PE

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the Irish primary and post primary physical education curricula, describe the role of these curricula in the whole school context, and identify examples of good practice in physical education policy and curricula nationally and internationally, considering educational standards and guidelines
2. Develop and understanding of curriculum design, and plan and develop curriculum documents and resources suitable for the delivery of PE at Junior Cycle
3. Identify their own teaching philosophy and value orientation, and describe how a teacher’s philosophy and value orientation may influence their curricular decisions and practices when teaching physical education
4. Explain the factors affecting choice of curriculum models, instructional models and teaching and assessment strategies, and identify strategies to appropriately challenge learners and gauge pupil achievement within the curriculum confines.
5. Define the role and pattern of government involvement in physical education in Ireland and abroad, and identify the forces and factors that have contributed to the shaping of Irish PE.
6. Demonstrate the following transferable skills: oral and written communication skills; intellectual skills of analysis, synthesis and problem solving; self management skills; and group work skills.
