Description
This module introduces students to the theory and practice of terminology, and gives students hands-on experience of contemporary tools used in terminology work, including terminology management systems, term extraction tools, and corpus processing tools.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain in your own words different computational approaches that can be taken to terminology work and give examples of relevant tools 2. Use a computerised text analysis tool to extract term candidates from a collection of highly specialised digital texts 3. Appraise the degree to which term candidates proposed by a computerised tool relate to domain-specific concepts in a collection of highly specialised digital texts 4. Classify the terminological and conceptual information extracted from a collection of highly specialised texts 5. Write terminology-oriented definitions for concepts identified in a collection of highly specialised digital texts using ISO standards 6. Devise a computational approach to terminology work suited to a particular context of multilingual needs and specialised language purposes

| Presentation | The student will record themself making an 8-minute pitch to a particular organisation to convince them to adopt a computational approach to their terminology work that the student has devised. | 20% | Week 8 | | Project | The student will carry out terminology work as an individual project and submit a project report for assessment. Specifically, as part of the project they will:
explain the approach to terminology work that you have taken;
create a digital corpus of patent and other specialised information in English in a specialised field of knowledge using computerised tools;
extract four concepts from that corpus using a combination of automated and manual term extraction techniques;
appraise the degree to which term candidates proposed by a computerised tool relate to domain-specific concepts in the corpus and submit the four concepts for which you have the strongest evidence of termhood for examination;
classify the terminological and conceptual information related to these four concepts using graphic representations and a terminology management system;
write terminology-oriented definitions for the four concepts submitted for examination using ISO standards. | 80% | Sem 1 End |
