Description

This module aims to introduce the student to preventing injuries and illnesses. Topics covered will include: Sports injury prevention models, Safety rules in sport (including changes), Role of internal and environmental factors on athlete’s risk (including previous injury, flexibility, training load, fatigue etc), Role of equipment and materials in preventing sports injuries (including taping, helmet, shoes,etc), Biomechanical aspects of injury prevention Principles of applied prevention (including warm-up, recovery strategies, etc), Current pre-participation screening protocols, Current prevention programme analysis, Psychological predisposition to injury and fear of re-injury. Theories that underpin behaviour change and adherence to sports injury prevention strategies.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify and correct athletes’ modifiable risk factors (fitness, flexibility, technique, etc)
2. Show knowledge of the pre-participation screening protocols currently available
3. Design, implement and plan both individual and team prevention programme
4. Educate athletes, patients, coaches about prevention issues

Group project The students will be asked to work in small groups and based on a chosen sport, identify the common injuries and risk factors for injury in that sport. Using this information they will then design an injury prevention programme for that sport. Each group will be required to submit a written and video assignment on this project.60%Week 11
Group project Design, implement and write a report on a pre-participation screening developed for a specific individual athlete.40%Week 7

Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment
