Description

This module aims to present current concepts and practical skills relating to prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries for the Atheltic Therapist and Trainer as part of the multidisciplinary team. This will include the ability to develop a multifaceted programme dependent on the individual patient's needs. It will include methods to increase joint range of motion (including manual therapy techniques), flexibility, proprioception, strength, endurance and power based upon a detailed needs analysis and clinical assessment. It will deal with injury and sports specific rehabilitation and return to play decision making.

Learning Outcomes

1. Formulate a rehabilitation programme based upon a detailed needs analysis and clinical assessment
2. Develop and deliver a progressive exercise programme for common musculoskeletal injuries
3. Develop and implement activity specific end stage rehabilitation programmes
4. determine the ability of a patient to return to physical activity
5. Choose and perform the appropriate manual therapy (including joint mobilisation technique) in the rehabilitation of a patient

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Developing a rehabilitation programme
How to synthesize the findings of a needs analysis and clinical evaluation to plan, monitor and implement a rehabilitation programme

Design and implement a rehabilitation programme for common musculoskeletal injuries
Common musculoskeletal injuries include, but are not limited to the following.

1. Concussion

- addressing vestibular and oculomotor disturbance, cervical spine pain, headache, vision, psychological needs, nutrition, sleep disturbance, exercise, academic and behavioral accommodations, and risk reduction

2. Hamstring and quads injuries

3. Injuries to the spine

4. Injuries to the hip, groin and pelvis

5. Knee injuries

6. Injuries to the shin, ankle and foot

7. Injuries of the shoulder complex

8. Injuries of the elbow, wrist and hand

Manual therapy/Joint mobilization techniques
This will deal with how to select and deliver the appropriate joint mobilization technique for joints of the spine, upper and lower limbs

Sports specific rehabilitation/return to play decision making
Development of return to play criteria and testing
