Module Title Introduction to Physiotherapy Professional Practice

Description

This module provides students with a foundational understanding of professional practice in healthcare, focusing on the CORU Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics and Standards of Proficiency. Spanning two semesters, the module covers key concepts, frameworks, and skills essential for success in clinical practice. It supports the development of personal and professional competencies, preparing students for the challenges of working within a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Students will learn about their role in healthcare teams, with a focus on communication, ethics, documentation, medico-legal and reflective practice in professional contexts. Ethical decision-making and the application of evidence based knowledge in clinical environments are emphasized. This module also requires completion of mandatory Garda vetting, Basic Life Support (BLS) training, Manual Handling/ Patient Movement, and relevant HSELand e-learning modules. The module serves as the foundation for the "Advanced Physiotherapy Professional Practice and Service Innovation" module in Year 2, supporting students to build the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed for a successful career in healthcare as they progress through the program.

Learning Outcomes

1. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: Apply knowledge of CORU Code of Professional Conducts and Ethics for Physiotherapists and Physiotherapy Standards of Proficiency to detail the role and professional responsibilities of physiotherapists within the healthcare environment and multidisciplinary teams.
2. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: Integrate knowledge of social determinants of health, to discuss patient-centered and biopsychosocial approaches to healthcare, underpinned by the International Classification of Functioning framework.
3. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: Discuss the importance of using effective communication and intercultural skills with patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals, and be able to adapt communication styles as appropriate to varying situations.
4. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: Understand and apply ethical principles in healthcare practice, with a focus on patient rights, consent, and confidentiallity.
5. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: Demonstrate proficiency in the clear and accurate documentation of patient care, using SOAP notes to comply with legal obligations, including medico-legal reporting and record keeping.
6. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: Discuss the roles of member of the multidisciplinary team to contribute effectively to teamwork within a healthcare environment.
7. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: Apply reflective practice techniques to analyse clinical experiences and promote professional development and a commitment to lifelong learning.
8. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: Develop effective conflict resolution skills and contribute to a positive working environment.
9. On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: Provide evidence of successful complettion of Basic Life Support, (BLS), Manual handling, Garda Clearance, HSELand e-learning modules pre-placement mandatory training.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Role and Responsibilities of Physiotherapists in Healthcare
Interactive lectures and case studies on professional roles in different healthcare settings. Guest speakers from multidisciplinary teams sharing insights on physiotherapy integration. Multidisciplinary teaching and learning event involving students from other disciplines. Group discussions on professional identity and evolving responsibilities.

Professional and Regulatory Frameworks (CORU Standards and Code of Conduct)
Analysis of CORU’s Standards of Proficiency and Code of Conduct. Case-based discussions on ethical dilemmas and regulatory compliance. Self-directed learning and quizzes on professional regulations.

Patient-Centred and Biopsychosocial Approaches in Physiotherapy
Application of the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) framework in case scenarios. Role-playing exercises to explore person-centred care strategies. Critical discussions on integrating biopsychosocial models in physiotherapy interventions.

Effective Communication and Intercultural Competency in Healthcare
