To develop an understanding of the structure, development, problems and potential of the Irish economy and the economic policies applied to these issues and with a particular reference to Ireland's membership of the EC.

Public Finances: level and structures of expenditure and taxation; Borrowing and national debt; Taxation policy: economic impact of expenditure and taxation.
Demography and Employment: Level and trend in population; Components of change; Age Structure; Population forecasts Regional Patterns of population change; Emigration; Labour force and employment; Participation rates. EU comparisons.
Fiscal, Monetary and Exchange Rate Policy: Small open economy; Demand management; Irish fiscal policy; Irish monetary policy; Exchange rate trends and determinants; Balance of payments; EMS; Central bank; Determinants of inflation.
Industrial Policy: Sectoral and size pattern of manufacturing; Performance of the Irish economy in output, employment and exports; Direct foreign investment; Indigenous export performance; Industrial policy; Determinants of competitiveness; International services.
Agricultural: Structure and performance; Impact of EC policies; Policy towards agriculture.
Regional Development: Measurement of disparities; Range of disparities; EU and Irish regional policy.
European Community: Consequences of membership; Impact of moves towards greater economic integration.
