Module Aims
To introduce students to the framework and operation of the Irish political system through a combination of lectures and case studies. To give students an awareness of how political systems works.

Learning Outcomes
Students should have a good grasp of the nature of the Irish political system. Students should have a basic awareness of the centres of decision-making in political systems.

1. Understanding Irish Politics who influences policy comparing Ireland The origins of the Irish state and its impact on modern Irish politics. 2. Irish Constitutional development 1919, 1922, 1937 Bunreacht na hEireann and its impact on modern political life. 3. The Irish Party system. 4. Elections and voting behavior in Ireland. 5. Dáil Éireann: its role and how it operates, the role of TDs. 6. The Government The Irish President and recent elections. 7. Public policy. 8. Social Partnership and interest groups. 9. Gender relations in Irish society and public policy. 10-11. Northern Ireland the peace process and prospects for a solution north-south links and `the island economy'. 12. Ireland and the European Union the dynamic of European integration the EU's impact on Irish politics
