7 to uncover the key assumptions and doctrines underpinning the conduct of Irish foreign policy 7 to explore the Irish foreign policy formulation process 7 to examine the key bilateral and multi-lateral external engagements of the Irish state since independence 7 to discuss current and future foreign policy dilemmas in the light of Ireland's experience

Learning Outcomes
Students should have a good general grasp of key aspects of Irish foreign policy since independence, of the dynamics of foreign policy formulation, and of emerging issues for Ireland in European and international affairs.

The roots of Irish foreign policy ideas; ideals, concepts and premises in Irish foreign policy formulation and operation; the foreign policy process and domestic politics; Anglo-Irish, Irish-American, and Irish-European relations; Ireland and the post-colonial world; Ireland and European integration; Ireland and the international community.
