Module Aims
1. To introduce advanced numerical methods. 2. To cover the use of Excel for the solution of engineering problems.

Learning Outcomes
After completing the module students should be able to: 1. Efficiently create Excel spreadsheets for the solution of engineering problems. 2. Implement numerical methods in Excel and use Excels built-in calculation facilities. 3. Understand a range of numerical methods and their limitations.

· Solving sets of linear equations - Thomas algorithm - ill-conditioned systems - iterative improvement - Gauss-Seidel Method · Root-finding - optimisation - golden section search - steepest descent method · Solution of ODEs - Second-Order equations - systems of equations - Runge-Kutta methods - step-size control - interval-halving - stiff ODEs and ill-conditioned problems · Boundary-Value Problems- Shooting Method - Finite-difference method · Eigenvalues - Power method · Interpolation - polynomial fits - Vandermonde matrices - Newton's difference method · Solution of Elliptic PDEs using central difference method · Use of Excel for engineering calculations and data presentation · Introduction to Macro programming in Excel
