Module Aims
|
1. To introduce advanced numerical methods.
2. To cover the use of Excel for the solution of engineering problems.

Learning Outcomes
|
After completing the module students should be able to:
1. Efficiently create Excel spreadsheets for the solution of engineering problems.
2. Implement numerical methods in Excel and use Excels built-in calculation facilities.
3. Understand a range of numerical methods and their limitations.

· Solving sets of linear equations - Thomas algorithm - ill-conditioned systems - iterative improvement - Gauss-Seidel Method
· Root-finding - optimisation - golden section search - steepest descent method
· Solution of ODEs - Second-Order equations - systems of equations - Runge-Kutta methods - step-size control - interval-halving - stiff ODEs and ill-conditioned problems
· Boundary-Value Problems- Shooting Method - Finite-difference method
· Eigenvalues - Power method
· Interpolation - polynomial fits - Vandermonde matrices - Newton's difference method
· Solution of Elliptic PDEs using central difference method
· Use of Excel for engineering calculations and data presentation
· Introduction to Macro programming in Excel
