Module Aims
To provide students with an insight and appreciation of the impact of taxation on business and business decisions.

Learning Outcomes
Students will obtain an understanding of the tax systems within which companies must operate. This will develop their ability to consider the impact of taxation on business decisions. They will develop the ability to analyse the information needed to prepare basic tax computations and to evaluate the impact of taxation on the reported results of a business and on the financing requirement of organisations.

Indicative Syllabus

Introduction:

The development and structure of taxation legislation; Revenue and capital taxation; Direct and indirect taxes.

Philosophies of Taxation: The objective of taxation; Economic efficiency; Effects of tax on work effort, on saving, capital formation and on enterprise and risk taking; Criteria of taxation; Alternatives to taxation.

Administration: Residence, ordinarily residence and domicile residence, ordinarily resident and domicile; Role of the Budget, Finance Acts, Tax Acts and Case Law; Self Assessment; Collection of Revenue; Interest; Powers of the Revenue.

Capital Gains Tax: Scheme of Capital Gains Tax, Chargeable persons, definition of disposal, definition of disposal computations, development land, losses and exemptions.

Corporation Tax: Taxable income and classification into schedules and cases, scope and rules for each schedule and case; Schedule D Case I and II: Definition of trade, allowable and restricted expenses, losses, capital allowances; Schedule D Case III, IV and V: determination of amounts assessable; Provisions for manufacturing companies. Computation development. Land losses exemption.

VAT: Principles, scope and effects on businesses; Operation of Value Added Tax, records, registration exemption, input credits, returns and payment.

PAYE & PRSI: Principles, scope and effect on businesses; Operation of PAYE, records and payment dates; Employer''s PRSI contributions and obligations.
