Module Aims
7 To provide a detailed working knowledge of methods used in advanced immunoanalysis - their applications, advantages and limitations.

Learning Outcomes
Students should gain:  Practical experience of the production of monoclonal antibodies.  Detailed knowledge of the production and characterisation of antibodies and enzyme-labelled antibodies.  'Hands-on' experience of advanced aspects of immunoanalysis.  Experience in mixing theoretical and practical skills.

Indicative Syllabus
¿ Production of monoclonal antibodies. Students will perform and monitor a myeloma/spleen fusion. ¿ Isolation of specific antibodies using salt precipitation and affinity chromatography. ¿ Antibody characterisation including SDS electrophoresis, HPLC and ELISA. ¿ Production and characterisation of antibody-enzyme conjugates. ¿ Use of the Biacore 'Real-Time' Sensor system in immunoanalysis. ¿ Immunodiagnostic methods, including immunoblotting techniques. ¿ Immunofluroescence techniques.
