Indicative Syllabus
The course will begin with an introduction to the major economic, technological and social changes that have led, in the 19th and 20th centuries, to the emergence of a 'global culture'. It will survey the internationalising and standardising of cultural forms through the development of world travel, consumerism and communications. The main part of the course will comprise analysis of the practical effects and influences of these developments in the countries considered, concentrating on manifestations of cultural transfer and exchange, and the dissemination of monoculturalism through market forces. It will examine the interaction of global developments with local conditions and traditions, and seek to establish, through comparison of the countries considered, the extent to which cultural specificity and difference is maintained. Topics will be drawn from the following spheres of culture transfer and localisation: · the experience of Americanisation in the post-war era, particularly in the sphere of popular and youth culture and consumerism. · the growth of world tourism and its ideological and economic origins and effects, with particular emphasis on its influence on communal and regional environments, economies and customs. · the globalisation of the media industry, with particular attention to the standardising of entertainment and the provision of news and information across national frontiers, with comparative analysis of specific forms of journalistic and artistic production.
