Module Aims
7 Inculcate critical analysis in the selection and use of research methods. 7 Link philosophical paradigms to research and research methods. 7 Inculcate ways to collect and analyse data for experimental and non-experimental research methods. 7 Lay the foundations for further use of research methods in the research enquiry module.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module and following a period of personal study, it is intended the student will be able to: 7 Discuss epistemological influences on nursing/midwifery research. 7 Discuss conceptual and theoretical frameworks for research problems. 7 Critically evaluate research methods in relation to research in health and social care. 7 Discuss methods of data collection and analysis for qualitative and quantitative research designs. 7 Discuss the significance of validity and reliability of research methods. 7 Discuss the use of descriptive and inferential statistics and triangulation techniques.

· Research literacy and evidence-based practice. · Research process - formulation of research problems, hypothesis generation and research design. · Research paradigms. · Qualitative approaches - philosophy, techniques and methods of analysis. · Quantitative approaches - philosophy, techniques and methods of analysis. · Validity and reliability in research. · Critical evaluation of research methods. · Literature reviewing. · Developing a research proposal.
