Module Aims
The aims of the module are twofold: 1. To develop a critical understanding of the use of sound and music in multimedia. 2. To give students a practical introduction to the planning and implementation of audio and music components in mm projects.

Learning Outcomes
A detailed and critical knowledge of the use of audio and music technologies in the media industries. A practical grasp of analog and digital recording and editing techniques, and the capacity to analyse the role of sound in meaning systems.

Indicative Syllabus
Sound recording from analog to digital; Relationship between images, sounds, music and text; The semiotics of sound and music; Sound and narratives including the uses of silence, sounds, sound cues and interfaces; Data compression, bandwidth and storage of audio data; Sampling and authorship; Generating music.
