To introduce students to the operation of the Irish political system and in so doing, enable the students to understand the operation of political systems more generally.

Learning Outcomes
Students will have a basic understanding of the operation of Irish politics and its institutions, and should be able to translate this knowledge to other political systems.

The origins of the Irish state and its legacy Irish political culture/cleavage structure Basic Institutions and constitutional development The party system Elections and voting behaviour in Ireland The Houses of the Oireachtas: Dail Eireann and Seanad Eireann - role and operation The Government: Taoiseach and Cabinet Policy-making in Ireland: The bureacracy; other state bodies; non-state bodies Northern Ireland: origins and legacy of the conflict Ireland and the EU: a changing relationship?
