Module Aims
1. To facilitate the nurse to expand nursing practice and improve the care given to people with intellectual disability and their families/carers through service innovation, development, delivery evaluation and educational initiatives. 2. To integrate and apply knowledge and skills gained in the study of the topics ethics, clinical judgement and decision making to the care of the person with intellectual disability in any care setting.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module and following a period of personal study the student will be able to: 7 Examine, analyse and evaluate a range of conceptual frameworks e.g. models used in nursing with a view to developing specialist practice. 7 Plan, set and audit standards of nursing care in all care settings. 7 Discuss the concept of personal outcome planning and demonstrate how this approach could be used in the care of a person with intellectual disability. 7 Act as a specialist case manager within any care setting. 7 Conduct comprehensive clinical risk assessments and develop appropriate risk management plans in conjunction with clients, carers and other health professionals. 7 Analyse the role of the clinical nurse specialist in the area of intellectual disability 7 Develop, implement and evaluate a programme of education that meets the needs of the carers of people with intellectual disability in any care setting.

Indicative Syllabus
· Comparing and contrasting various models of nursing, adapting models of nursing to practice area and evaluation of nursing models used. · Quality assurance strategies, setting standards, auditing, involvement of service users, carers, staff, relatives, other professionals in the setting and monitoring of standards. · Personal outcome planning, individuality in service planning, individual teaching and developmental plans. · Case management, case selection, pre-admission screening, assessment, therapeutic interventions such as health care, referral, family counselling, conflict management, discharge planning and follow up. · Risk management, societal norms and risk taking, reviewing the benefits of and concerns about clients with intellectual disability and staff members taking risks. · Specialist practice, the clinical nurse specialist in intellectual disabilities, advanced nurse practitioner in intellectual disabilities examples from the UK, articulating the nature of specialist practice. Scope of Practice 2000 documentation. · Education of peers, family members, volunteers, care staff and mentoring junior staff. · Workshop on clinical judgement and decision making in relation to intellectual disability nursing practice (Topics to include:-managing life transitions, behaviours that challenge).
