Module Aims
To introduce the student to advanced experimental techniques in the areas of Optics, Solid State Physics, Instrumentation, Process Control, Nuclear Physics and Computational Physics. To enhance the students understanding of concepts presented in lectures. To provide the student with training in; good laboratory practice; data analysis; data presentation and report writing.

Learning Outcomes
The student will develop good laboratory procedures for carrying out advanced level physics experiments. The student will know how to keep an accurate and detailed record of an experiment and how to produce a written technical/scientific report. The student will develop the ability to evaluate, extract information from, and critically analyse data.

Indicative Syllabus
The student will carry out one 3 week project plus 7 experiments chosen from the following list: OPTICS: Holography, Laser Diode Characterisation, Image Processing, Blackbody Radiation. INSTRUMENTATION: 8080 Microprocessor, Bytronic Control Rig, Microtensiometer, Digital Signal Processing. SOLID STATE: Debye Temperature of Solids, The Varistor, Schottky Barrier Measurement, Schockley-Haynes Experiment, Band-gap Measurement in Silicon. NUCLEAR: Beta Back scattering, X-ray Imaging COMPUTER: C-Programming, Digital Signal Processing, Blackbody Radiation. Diffusion in a Semiconductor. Project.
