Indicative Syllabus

Indicative Syllabus:

Cultural diversity in time and space is the main theme of this course: examining the twentieth century in other cultural latitudes requires questioning assumptions that we make about the nature and composition of other societies and involves us in the process of adopting, at least temporarily, beliefs and attitudes that in some cases are alien to our own. We start by examining the colonial background of some Latin American countries and how some of that mentality is not altogether gone. We then move into the twentieth century and to the analysis of the selected texts to reflect upon diverse tendencies and national communities and their increasingly crucial importance in the world.

Students read the following material:

  • A representative short novel.
  • A selection of short stories.
  • A selection of poems.
