Module Aims

to study three major 20^th-century French literary texts
to develop reading skills across a range of genres and literary styles
to understand the cultural and literary background from which these works emerged
to have a greater understanding through literature of modern and contemporary France.

Learning Outcomes

This course has been designed to help students develop and use some important analytical and interpretative skills. As a result of taking this module, students will be able to:

describe and explain the structure, internal coherence and themes of the works they have studied
identify and critically discuss the psychological or social issues dealt with by each author
recognise how a particular genre (theatre, poetry, novel) is related to the socio-cultural and literary context from which it emerged
understand some of the key changes in literary expression in 20^th-century France.
