Module Aims

This module aims to:

1)       …discover how sexuality and gendered subjectivity is constructed in fiction, film and theatre. We will explore how these narrative forms serve as technologies of gender, and how they work to establish and to subvert stereotypes of masculinity and femininity.



Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, you will:

  • Be able to comment on the historical and cultural continuities and discontinuities in the literary and cinematic representation of gender and sexuality.
  • Be able to relate this understanding of the representation of gender to broader intercultural issues, including the dialectic of particularity and universality.

Indicative Syllabus

This course will interrogate the social construction of masculine and feminine identities. Among other themes, readings will problematise historical and cultural configurations of gender, mythologies of heroism and male self-fulfilment, male and female initiations, the social and physical praxis of masculinity and femininity.
