Module Aims
? To increase the theoretical knowledge base of students who care for children and their families with Diabetes Mellitus and other forms of diabetes.? To further the students practical knowledge and clinical skills in the nursing care and management of children with diabetes and their families.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module and following a period of personal study the student will be able to:?Assess, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate evidence based care in the nursing management of children with diabetes? Demonstrate knowledge in relation to the pathophysiological processes associated with diabetes and relate them to the delivery of nursing care.?Demonstrate detailed knowledge of local, national and international guidelines for best practice with regard to the management of childhood diabetes?Following analysis and synthesis of relevant literature provide research based health promotion and health education to both the child and family in a variety of healthcare settings.?Critically review the social/economical/psychological/emotional impact on the child and family of a chronic illness such as diabetes.? Identify and appreciate cultural differences when working with children and families from differing cultural communities ?Analyse the importance of family centered care and partnership care in meeting the holistic needs of the child and family.

Indicative Syllabus
Through a combination of clinical experiences and academic work, students will apply their new knowledge and clinical skills in practice. To achieve this the syllabus will reflect the following content:
-         Anatomy and Physiology of the endocrine system
-         Epidemiology of diabetes in Ireland and internationally
-         A etiology and  patho-physiology of diabetes
-         Nursing care of a child with diabetes
-         Medical management of child with diabetes
-         Pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of childhood diabetes
-         Specialist investigations
-         Application of health promotion and health education principles in the provision of care
-         Family centered care
-         Effects of chronic illness on the child and family
-         Cultural aspects of individual patient careRoles within the multidisciplinary team
