Module Aims
1. To critically review the main health and social issues effecting people with intellectual disability who are older and develop a range of approaches to healthy living. 2. To analyse and integrate knowledge and skills required to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for individuals who are ageing. 3. To critically evaluate strategies and models used in the delivery of care to the older person with intellectual disability and their carers in any setting.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module and following a period of personal study the student will be able to: 7 Analyse the general and specific biological and psychological problems experienced by people with intellectual disability who are older. 7 Evaluate and implement practice based approaches to health education and health promotion for older individuals with intellectual disability and their carers. 7 Explicate the difficulties encountered by nurses when assessing older people and evaluate at least five assessment tools used to identify an individual's needs. 7 Critically review pharmacological considerations that relate to people who are older with particular emphasis on age-related changes, polypharmacy, adverse reactions, and the ongoing monitoring of an individuals pharmacological need. 7 Describe the experiences of older people who may have difficulty in communicating and analyse a range of interventions used including assistive technology in ageing related care. 7 Explore the principles and practices of interventions used in ageing related care based on behavioural, cognitive, or family therapy approaches. 7 Identify a range of client outcome indicators and discuss how they may be used in the area of ageing related care. 7 Demonstrate an understanding of the skills that underpin effective evaluation of nursing activities and interventions in ageing related care. 7 Recognise the signs of elder abuse and critically analyse the role of the nurse in developing local policies and guidelines relating to this issue.

Indicative Syllabus
· Specific health issues associated with ageing. · Mental illness and ageing, risk factors associated with intellectual disability & ageing, differential diagnosis. · Health education and health promotion for particular topics, target groups and settings. · Assessment, the principles of assessment, generic and specific assessments used with older adults with intellectual disability and their carers. · Pharmacological interventions. · Communication verbal and non-verbal, successful communication assistive technological aids, communicating with people who have dementia, dysarthria and aphasia. · Principles of therapies: - Music therapy, Sonas, Pottery, Snoozelen, PEATA, complimentary therapies SPRED, gardening, journaling, active retirement groups,. The "Go for Life" campaign. · Evaluation of interventions including quantitative and qualitative patient outcome measures. · Recognizing abuse dealing with families/carers, developing guidelines relating to elder abuse, harm reduction and minimisation strategies.
