Module Aims

This module sets the level A2-B1 from the Common European Framework of
Reference as its minimum exit level. It aims
to further develop students' personal language-learning strategies that will enable them to become autonomous language users and learners.

To improve students’ language competence and increase fluency.

To discuss current issues of modern , in social, political and cultural scenarios.

To assist students in taking responsibility for their goals settings, delivery of set tasks and time management.

Assume that a 5 credit module load represents approximately 75 hours' work, which includes all teaching, in-course assignments, laboratory work or other specialised training and an estimated private learning time associated with the module.

Indicative Syllabus

The syllabus adopts a task-based approach. Students will engage in group or peer projects designed to foster the development of learner autonomy and autonomous language use.

The social and cultural issues presented in the class will include areas such as education in , young population in , sports in , intercultural societies, cinema…

The CA will consist of an oral presentation and a written project. In order to carry out these tasks the students will develop research skills, including critical information retrieval and time management. The students will become familiar with the experience of collaborative writing through the use of wikis. The students will also improve their presentations skills, both in oral and written format.

 

The End of Semester Examination will require students to demonstrate their ability to reflect on the target language. In the exam the students will give evidence of the knowledge acquired while carrying out the tasks during the course (both grammatical content as well as cultural aspects). They will also show their ability to recognise cultural differences in everyday situations.

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

1) Language skills (Know-how & skill)

  • Ability to understand the main ideas of written and oral texts
  • Demonstrate language awareness and knowledge of grammar structures at intermediate level
  • Narrate a news story or the plot of a film
  • Get familiar with critical analysis of oral and written texts, focusing on cultural aspects. Analyse them orally and in writing, showing awareness of  use of the target language
  • Show the ability to interact with their peers and teachers, orally and in writing on-line (wiki) on a variety of familiar topics

2) Intercultural competence (Competence)

  • Use correct register according to social setting and environments
  • Cultural awareness of a everyday topic (wiki collaborative writing task)

3) Transferable skills and learning to learn (Competence)       

  • Becoming familiar with strategies used in group learning activities
  • Reflect on  their language learning experience and outcomes-

Becoming aware of the differences between academic levels (secondary school versus third level) and start reflecting on their own learning process
